Women's Basketball Signs Three Spartans for 2019-20

The MACU Women's Basketball team has officially announced the signing of Aleah Riles, Sarita Smith, and Clariese Smith for the 2019-20 season.

The trio of Aleah, Sarita and Clariese were a part of the 2018-19 Girls varsity basketball program at Veritas Collegiate Academy in Chesapeake, Virginia.  In their final season for the Spartans they helped lead their team to a first ever appearance in the VISAA state tournament and a first round victory before falling in the state quarterfinal.  For the year the Spartans finished 12-10 under the guidance of Head Coach Xiomara Hernandez.

A 5'8 forward, Aleah Riles from Moyock, North Carolina finished her high school career averaging 7.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.  While at MACU Aleah intends to pursue a degree in Business Administration.

Completing the trio are twins, 5'8 guard Sarita Smith and 5'8 forward, Clariese Smith from Chesapeake, Virginia.  For her career Sarita held averages of 5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game, while Clariese finished her career averaging 2 points and 3.3 rebounds.  During her time at MACU Clairese will be pursuing a degree in Counseling and Psychology and Sarita will be pursuing a degree in the Nursing Preparation program.

"This was a first for our program and I believe a rarity in general to sign three outstanding student-athletes all from one high school team in the same year.  During the recruiting process I had the privilege to see all three of them play in person, including winning a hard fought first round state tournament game and I was impressed with what each of them contributes to their team.  Through their high school experience they have seen firsthand the hardwork and dedication that is required to be successful and achieved some incredible results under Coach Hernandez.  All the while they have excelled in the classroom and beyond, and these are the type of young ladies we want to recruit to be here, and we were fortunate to find them all at Veritas.  I believe that they will make an immediate impact for our team and we are looking forward to getting them on the court for the Lady Mustangs." - Coach Troxell
