Volleyball coach Kellie Kessler didn't have to look far to bolster the MACU receiving corps. She just went to her speed dial.
Sydney Becker suited up for Kessler and the Tidewater Beach Breakers in Virginia Beach, Virginia last season and has agreed to follow her former coach to Elizabeth City this fall. For the Breakers, Becker anchored the middle and led the team in serves received (171) and third in total blocks (36). The 5'8" senior's solid all-around play also produced an 88% serving percentage and 32 digs.
Not only her athletic talent, but also her faith was on display, evidenced by being recognized with the team's Christian Leadership award.
"Syd came to me for the first time fall of 2015," according to Kessler. "She had played for Tallwood High until she was homeschooled her senior year. She was a strong leader and overall player for the Beach Breakers. Her specialty is middle hitter. I am grateful that she will be following me to MACU as I know she will be a strong leader and player for the Mustangs."
Becker has served as a Student Ambassador for the American Israeli Friendship League and is active in Avalon Church of Christ in Virginia Beach. She is looking forward to beginning her studies in the newly planned Biology program at MACU.
