Libero Ashley Sawyer Becomes First Signee for 2017 Volleyball

Ashley Sawyer from South Creek (NC) High School in Robersonville is the first 2017 volleyball signee for Coach Kellie Kessler.  Sawyer was instrumental in leading Coach Darryl Pittman's Cougars to a second-place finish in the tough Two Rivers Conference and a ninth seed in the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament.

Sawyer, a four-year libero for the Cougars, not only brings skills to the court but also to the classroom, being honored three times as a South Creek All-Academic Athlete. She also starred for the Cougar softball team.

Ashley is a committed member of Full Gospel Holiness Church. She says she made the decision to come to Elizabeth City because "MACU will help me further my education while guiding me on the path God intended to better prepare me for my life ministries as well. Philippians 4:13 is my favorite scripture because it is my personal motivation to keep pushing to get everything done. Even though things may seem hard at first, I know everything is possible with God by my side."

She plans on majoring in biology and elementary education.
