Box Score 3 The MACU Men's Basketball team returned home for the 6th Annual MACU Mustangs Showcase and immediately set out to put their stamp on the young season by defending their home court. In the first of three straight days of action the Mustangs turned a 14 point half time deficit into a second half stunner as the home team knocked off the 2017 Bible College NIT Champion Trinity College of Florida, by a final of 84-79. All five starters scored in double figures for the Mustangs led by freshmen guard Grayson Tejeda with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists while senior Dixon Ogwo registered the double double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Day two of the showcase would see the Mustangs take on their third NAIA foe of the young season, falling by a final score of 87-58 to Montreat College. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 0-3 against NAIA opponents this year. Tejeda led the Mustangs in scoring for the second day with 14, while Ogwo and Timothy DeLaRosa both added 13 off the bench.
In the third and final match-up of the weekend the Mustangs took on Carolina Christian College of the ACCA. The Mustangs started the game strong taking an eleven point lead into the half and following that up with a solid second half that would lead the Mustangs to the blow out win by a final of 91-73. Freshman Tyler Hendrix led all scorers with 27 points while Tejada registered his first career double double with 20 points and 11 assists.
As the Men's team concluded the sixth annual Mustangs Showcase with a 2-1 record for the weekend, it would prove to be the most successful such venture for the Mustangs since the 2012-13 season, the Mustangs first as a collegiate program. The weekends wins moved the teams record to 2-3 overall. "This was a great weekend. There was a lot of energy in the gym," said Head Coach Allan Harris, "the guys are starting to come together and figure each other out, but we still have some things to improve on. There is a lot of season left and we have a goal of where we want to be by the end of it."
The Mustangs return to action on Friday November 17 as the Men head to NCAA Division II Chowan College. To stay up to date on scores, stats and your favorite Mustang players, checkout www.gomacumustangs.com or follow the Mustangs on twitter at @GoMACUMustangs.
