The Mid-Atlantic Christian University Mustangs Men's Basketball team defeated Mountain Gateway Community College 85-69 on Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs found themselves in an early deficit, trailing 20-7. A quick timeout by the Mustangs allowed the guys to regroup, and get some points on the board. A three from Senior
Talik Totten helped the Mustangs to tie the game up at 26, and finish the half on an 11-6 run to lead 37-32.
The Mustangs opened the second half on a 9-4 run, to go up 46-36 early into the half. The Mustangs would use that momentum to continue the rest of the half, and maintain control of the game. Mountain Gateway tied the game up at 48, but the Mustangs were able to weather the storm, and get back the momentum to finish the game strong.
"The team was challenged by a well coached opponent who jumped out on us by as much as 13 points early in the first half. Each player gave 100 percent effort to overcome that deficit and showed that as a team they were able to persevere and achieve a victory. It was great to see the team playing our style of basketball and never giving up on one another as well," said first year head coach
Charles Sims. "Our team defense picked up and as we switched gears leading into halftime and the second half we were able to reestablish the tone of the game and come out with the win," Sims stated on his teams defensive effort in the second half.
Freshman Noah Richardson-Keys led the offensive attack for the Mustangs, scoring 24 points on 9/13 shooting, and also pitched in 11 rebounds and nine steals.
Talik Totten collected 17 points, as well as two steals and two rebounds. Micah Colburn provided a spark off the bench, with 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while shooting 2/5 from three-point range.
