Mustangs mount impressive comeback, Defeat Regent in rivalry game

The Mid-Atlantic Christian University men's basketball team was victorious at home on Tuesday night, winning 76-74 over the Regent Royals.

The Mustangs scored the first basket of the night on a jumper made by Noah Richardson-Keys. A Talik Totten three-pointer would put the Mustangs up five-to-four, leading to Regent going on a 22-3 run. Trailing by 17 points, MACU was able to then go on a 19-2 run to tie the game back up at 24. The Royals finished the half on a run to go up 42-31 at the break. Regent led by double digits for the first 10 minutes of the second half before a three-pointer by Jajour Lambert brought the score to 61-54 in the Royals' favor. Threes by Richardson-Keys and Totten would cut the Regent lead down to one point with 6:31 to play in the game. A shot made by Micah Colburn with 6:18 left gave the Mustangs their first lead of the game since 18:44 remaining in the first half when MACU led 5-4. The Mustangs were able to string together a few possessions and gained a five point lead, until Regent tied the game at 68 with 3:05 left in the game. Trailing 72-71, Colburn found Lambert in the corner for a three, to retake the lead with 57 seconds left. A Regent basket tied the game at 74 with 37 seconds left, leading to a final possession for the Mustangs. The Mustangs missed a shot, and the Royals came up with the rebound ready to take the ball up the court. Totten came up clutch, gathering the steal, collected himself, and made a layup with four seconds left to give the Mustangs the lead, 76-74, and they would hold on for the victory.

"This was a game for the ages tonight. The guys showed true grit tonight, winning when the odds were stacked against them. We had players foul out, players out with injury, but we did it, and were able to comeback for the victory," said head coach Charles Sims. "This season has been a rebirth of MACU basketball. We have lots of basketball left to play, but we are taking it one day at a time, and keeping our eyes on our goal at the end of this season.

"It was a good game, and a great team win tonight. We got out of the hole we were in early on and kept fighting all game. I am so proud of this team win tonight," said sophomore guard Micah Colburn. Colburn continued, stating "Playing here at home is always a great time. We have a good home record, and I want to thank each and everyone of them (the fans) for always supporting us. It means so much to us."

"This game means so much to us. We had to battle through so much adversity and to come away with the win is huge. We were down big and able to come back. It's a great home win tonight," stated junior guard Talik Totten. When asked about how the team would get ready for Senior day on Saturday, Totten responded with "We're just going to get ready one day at a time. Saturday is a big day for Norm, and our team, and I am looking forward to playing here one last time this season."

Guard play was huge for the Mustangs tonight, with Totten and Colburn combining for 44 points. Totten finished with 26 points, two assists and a blocked shot, while Colburn had a season-high of 18 points alongside seven assists, six rebounds, and two steals. Noah Richardson-Keys was also a key factor in the Mustangs offensive production tonight, with 13 points, shooting 50% from the field. Jalen Jones was a solid contributor as well, with nine points and nine rebounds.

With the victory, the Mustangs are now 11-7 and have won five of their last six games. Next up for MACU is Senior day at home on Saturday, February 11th against Carolina Christian College at 2pm. Senior Jajour "Norm" Lambert will be honored prior to the game.
