Lady Mustangs Open 2020-21 Season with Close Win

Box Score

The Lady Mustangs entered into their season opener with high expectations for the season and did not disappoint as they defeated Carolina Christian College by a final of 66-64.

A game that featured multiple lead changes and shifts in momentum would see MACU down 2 going into the fourth quarter.  The Mustangs seized control with a stifling defense that gave up only 10 fourth quarter points to the Centurions, and managed to finally take the lead for good on the eventual game winner from freshmen Maeyanna Delk with just 32 seconds left to play.  Despite difficulties shooting at the free throw line throughout the evening, the Lady Mustangs were able to overcome based in part on their collective three point shooting display, as the team connected on 9 of 18 attempts from beyond the arc.

Freshmen Alexis Starks led the way on offense for the Mustangs with 18 points to go along with 5 steals with sophomore Kayla Kent adding 16 points including a 4-5 showing from beyond the three point line.  Sophomore Regina Woodley led all players with 12 rebounds in the contest.  Jada Pickett led the Centurions with 19 points.

"Tonight was a grind throughout.  We went on a run to open a small lead, then they went on a run to tie it up.  It was back and forth all night long and it took the collective effort of every player to secure the win.  This is a season opening victory that we can build on, and I look forward to seeing where we go from here.  It's great to know we can win games like this where we don't play our best."  Head Coach Charles Troxell on the team's win.

The Lady Mustangs return to action November 10 when they travel to Winston-Salem, NC to take on Carolina University, formerly Piedmont International.
