The Mid-Atlantic Christian University Lady Mustangs volleyball team defeated Virginia Peninsula Community College in 3 sets on Senior Night on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead behind dominant serves from McKenna Griffin and Judea Edmonds. Thanks to these serves and excellent team play, the Mustangs took the first set 25-7. The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead again in the second set, and were able to string together multiple points to help them breakaway and win set two 25-12. The Mustangs trailed for the first time to open up the third set, with a back and forth battle early on. VPCC took a 14-12 lead over the Mustangs, who responded with a 13-3 run to finish the set and win the game.
"Tonight's win really means a lot to us, especially it being on Senior night. I know the Seniors were looking forward to this game, so it means a lot to be able to get the win for them. Maddi, JuJu, and McKenna have all made great contributions to the program the past few years, and I am extremely excited to see where life takes them in this next chapter," MACU Head Volleyball Coach, Nicole Delosreyes.
"I can't even explain how great tonight feels, it's like all my hard work has finally paid off with the win here tonight. Tonight was such a good confidence booster for us with the conference tournament coming up, and it was great to have everyone here to support us tonight," Senior Judea Edmonds.
"Tonight was really nice for one of my last memories on the court. This past four years has been a journey, and the ending is bittersweet, but I am excited to see what this next chapter holds. One of my favorite memories with volleyball was all of the trips we went on, and the memories and bonds that came from those trips," Senior Maddison Turner.
"Tonight was so exciting, just having everyone here and supporting us and hype for every play, it does not get better than that. With this being a conference opponent, we will see them again on Saturday, so it was good to be able to get a victory over them. Volleyball has been such a positive memory for me over my last two years here, and we had fun, which is what matters," Senior McKenna Griffin.
The seniors led the way for the Mustangs in a big way. Judea Edmonds had 23 digs, nine kills, and five aces. McKenna Griffin also contributed in a big way, collecting 13 digs, nine kills, five aces, and an assist. Freshmen Lainie Russell and Emily HIll helped on the attack, each getting 10 assists.
The Lady Mustangs travel to Christendom this weekend for the
NSAC Conference Tournament, and will play VPCC again on Saturday morning in the first round.
