I sat down with second-year head volleyball coach
Nicole Delosreyes ahead of their season opener this week. We went over expectations for the season, key takeaways from last season, and how her two returning seniors will help guide the team this year. Below is the full interview.
Q: You start your season at home on Wednesday night, any expectations or goals heading into this season? Â
A: I really want all my players to do well this year, both on and off the court. I really want them to grow and bond together as a team, since we have so many new players we are looking to build this team for the years ahead.Â
Q: Last year was your first year as head coach and it was a bit of a down year, what have you taken away from last year that will help the team this year?
A: We had a lot of talented individual players last year, but struggled to put it together as a full team. This year our focus is going to be on playing as a team, and playing together rather than individually.
Q:Â With two returning seniors (
Maddison Turner and
McKenna Griffin), what impact will they have on this season, and how has their leadership been present so far in preseason?
A: Maddi and McKenna have both stepped up as leaders on and off the court so far. They both know how to give advice and suggestions, without overstepping any boundaries, and are great role models for the younger girls as athletes, students, and in their walk with Christ.Â
Q: With seven new players this year, what factors went into recruiting them, and how have they fit into the culture that you are building here at MACU?
A: I really looked for good team players that would fit with the chemistry of our returners. I also wanted to recruit ladies that I could see graduating from MACU, a solid GPA and good Christian character were things that I looked for in the recruiting process. So far, the combination of returning and new players has been fantastic and I am looking forward to seeing how this season goes.
Q: Thank you for your time coach, any additional comments you would like to add?
A: This is a great group of girls that the fans will really want to watch. They have all bonded together on the court, and I am excited to see how they play together this season.Â
Come out and watch the Lady Mustangs as they open their season at home against Pitt Community College on Wednesday, August 24th at 6pm.
