The Lady Mustangs hit the road to our nations capital Saturday, headed for a tri-match in search of their first win of the season. Instead, they came back with a pair of dominate wins over Trinity Washington University and Cheyney University.
Stepping on the court for an early match with the home team TWU Tigers, the Mustangs would set the tone for the day with a dominate first set with a final score of 25-9. Each set to follow would be more dominate than the last as the Mustangs only allowed the Tigers to score 6 points in the second set and 4 in the third and decisive set. The win by the Mustangs moves the volleyball program's record to 13-0 all time against Trinity. The team was led by seniors
McKenna Griffin with 14 kills and
Judea Edmonds with 8 service aces while
Lainie Russell registered 8 assists in the match.
In the second match of the day for the team, the competition was strong but the result was the same, as the Mustangs prevailed in 3 sets to take home their second win in a row. A final score of 25-23 in the first set would be the closest set of the match as the Mustangs would tighten up the defense for sets two and three, holding the Wolves to 16 and 10. The Mustangs were led by Edmonds with 10 kills, and Russell with 11 assists. Freshmen Libero
Reign Powell registered 7 digs in the contest.
When asked about the wins, Coach
Nicole Delosreyes stated, "This weekend's wins meant a lot to the team. It was refreshing to get two back to back wins after such a tough start to the season. We're hoping this is a turning point for us. Seeing the team come together and play like I know they can was so rewarding after all the hard work they've put in."
The Mustangs return to action on Thursday September 29 as they head to Rocky Mount, NC to take on North Carolina Wesleyan followed by a visit from Virginia Peninsula CC (formerly Thomas Nelson) on Friday September 30 in Chesson Gym on the campus of Mid-Atlantic Christian University.
